INTRODUCTION
EPHRAIM LEWIS is one of my all-time favorite male singers. If you like soul, R&B, and beautiful yet catchy pop music, then you MUST own his album, "Skin"!!! Many people compare his voice and style to that of SEAL, but I think that Ephraim Lewis is even more talented! I still listen to this amazing album almost every day of my life, and I can't get enough of it! My favorite songs on the album are "Captured" and "Drowning In Your Eyes."

Sadly, this GREAT performer died on March 18, 1994 at the young age of only 26, shortly after his first album was released (more info about his death below). Since his album came out, I have managed to collect what I believe to be the largest collection of Ephraim Lewis memorabilia, and recorded items (CDs, vinyl, videos) from around the world. Below are some items from my collection, I am happy to share with you. It's hard to believe it's been THIRTEEN YEARS since this great talent passed away. But his music will always live on in the hearts of his fans around the world.

DEATH OF A TRUE TALENT
According to the Rock and Pop Obituaries page of the Coroner's Corner web site, the cause of Ephraim Lewis's death was "suicide." According to the article, he jumped from a balcony of a Los Angeles apartment under mysterious circumstances. In June of 2007, I received an email from a Dr. Mike Alleyne, who had the official autopsy report in front of him, and he said it cites his "head injuries" as the cause of death. In any case, Lewis' family filed charges against Los Angeles police, claiming that Elektra Records and David Harper were responsible for the death. Police reported that they had chased the unclothed Lewis for an hour. After climbing up the side of an apartment building, he had eluded them by jumping from balcony to balcony. The family also claimed police shot Lewis three times with a 50,000-watt stun gun, causing his fall.

After many years of uncertainty, I finally managed to get a hold of a very detailed 8-page article about the life and death of Ephraim Lewis. A very, very special thanks to John Blake for providing the article, which is transcripted in its entirety on THIS PAGE. The article gives touching details about Ephraim's friends and family, as well as his music, secrets, and his very untimely death.

Consuela Nance from New York City wrote to me in October of 2002 and wanted to share her thoughts with other fans. She writes, "When I meet someone that actually has his music I automatically establish a bond with that person, because if there is a special interest in his music then I believe that person is special for recognizing it. I heard EL for the first time many years ago at a Venice restaurant named Hal's, and the music was so haunting and just appealed to me in a special way that I asked the owner who it was. I later purchased the music and played it over and over every day at my office where I worked, for Stonebridge Entertainment/Third Stone Music.

I would say I played it so much that a number of people who I worked with asked me to make them copies. One day Dick Rudolph, who worked with Michael Douglas for Stonebridge Entertainment, asked who this artist was, and had me make him a copy as well. Some time later, Dick told me that Ephraim and Laura Satterfield were in the recording studio doing a song for the soundtrack of the movie "Made in America" [called "I Know I Don't Walk On Water"]. I asked him if I could go to the session, because I did feel like I was responsible for Dick discovering him to use him for the movie, but he said no. I still think to this day that If we had met or he had made a new friend or someone new in his life things would have been different, we would have been pals, and that day might not have happened (60 degrees of separation you know?) I could already sense is his lyrics that he was not altogether happy, but I thought that a friendship could add a bit more joy and sunshine to a persons life, and I could have been that sunshine, but those are just my thoughts. Well, I am glad that he is not forgotten. He is always in my thoughts."

EMAIL FROM AN EYE WITNESS:
In June of 2005, I received a very interesting email from Dory Boyd, who wrote:

Ephraim died on an early morning in Hollywood (I was there). I had been visiting a friend after dropping him off that morning. My friend was showing me his place and we talked for a while. While looking out of his patio window, I remarked that there was a man (naked) sitting on the ground. He had just moved from Florida recently and thought I was pulling his leg.

Sure enough, the man was (Ephraim) though I never knew who he was at the time. He wasn't easy making out features so I never knew who the man was. Sure enough he started acting strangely screaming and someone must have called the police. My friend and I watched not knowing what to make of the situation. He proceeded to climb up the four story building by way of the balconies. Pulling himself up, and disregarding police orders to come down. Several times it looked as if he was going to fall but he'd catch himself. After about half an hour or so he managed to make it up to the fourth floor of the building. The police were able to grab him and get him into the sliding glass doorway of the balcony.

We then watched in horror as he was shot with a police taser. The electric shock caused his entire body to constrict rigidly and knocked him backward and over the balcony. He then fell head first onto the concrete below. I was unable to watch him land. There was a tree nearby and I had prayed inwardly that it would have slowed his descent enough for him to survive. It did not, he was then taken to the hospital by ambulance.

About 2 or 3 days later my friend informed me that the young man had died. He also informed me that after falling he remained conscious and apologized repeatedly to the paramedics/EMT's.

Later on he found out that the young man had been celebrating a new record deal and that someone at his party had slipped something into his drink.

FRIENDS OF EPHRAIM:
Renee Stahl <reneefromparis@yahoo.com> got to spend time with him about one week before he died; they went to Disneyland together. She thought he was an awesome person and writer singer etc. She still finds the whole thing a mystery. He died the night before he was to go back to London.

Alan Asbridge <asbridgea@TALK21.COM> was Mr. Lewis' music teacher. He recently wrote to me and told me that Mr. Lewis died on March 18th 1994 and was buried on April 21st 1994. Mr. Asbridge states that Ephraim Lewis died in LA, not in London England, as other sources claim (he died the night before he was to go back to London). He was definitely the best vocal talent around and some say that he could have been better than Michael Jackson!

Russ (who asked me not to publish his email address) knew Ephraim for a year or two back in the mid 80's. Dave Wilcox of Sinergy (that's the bald guy standing on the right in this photo) had just discovered him and was putting him through his paces. I knew Dave (who used to drink in my local pub) so we used to hang at the studio a lot. Had a good few nights chilling in the studio with Ephraim and his then girlfriend, Sarah (Tytherington? Still in the local music biz I think).

I believe there was a song called "Talking To America" being worked on - a very early sort of demo (although it was full quality - Dave didn't actually believe in demos, rather "make the finished product and sell it"). Very Murray Head style sound (but obviously with the smooth Ephraim vocals). In fact, I'm not sure that some of the bits in this song weren't done by a guy called John Malloy (sp?) who did actually have some kind of connection to Murray Head himself. That's all I can really remember except to say that Ephraim was a really nice guy, really chilled, very talented.

Hussein Boon (who played guitar on his debut album) wrote to me in June of 2007. He shares his story with us:

I was playing in a bar in London (Dover Street Wine Bar) with a singer. We were a bit of an experimental duo playing stuff that was quite ambient, lots of delays and loops. Anyway during the intermission a guy came up to me said he'd just signed his record deal and was celebrating with his manager and he really liked my guitar playing and asked if I would play on his album. I was flattered, said yes and gave him my number.

As time went on he didn't phone and I completely forgot about him until one day I got a call. He apologised for getting back to me so late but it had taken longer to get the production. So finally, he invited me up to Sheffield to record on Saturday and Sunday (can't remember the dates).

He was a very nice person and the brief time I was in his company he was always a gentleman and I listen to the record now and can only imagine what could have been.

I fund out about his death much later. For some reason it had escaped me. I was working on a film and the engineer was Alan Fisher who had also worked on the album and it was very late at night and were just chatting and Ephraim's name came up. You can imagine my shock on being told the truth.

A TOUCHING STORY:
Christina L. Thornton sent me this story on April 6, 2007. She would like to share it with other EL fans.....
In 1992, I was 10 years old and my father and I got into a car accident. I had to undergo extensive therapy and visit a chiropractor's office 3 times a week. At that time, there was a local 'jazz/smooth listening' station that played everything from Kenny G to Vanessa Williams. I remembered hearing this haunting melody called "Drowning in your Eyes." The voice was enchanting and soothing. From that day on, I could not get that song out if my head. That song stayed with me up until this point. I had heard that song several more times that summer and that year. After that, I never heard that voice again. I sometimes thought of the song, especially whenever my first love was around, and I always wondered who it was and where I could find it. Fast forward 14 years later; I walk into a Burger King and hear the song playing for the first time in probably 10 years. I was overjoyed, but still confused as to who it was. I started working with Wachovia Bank in August and while on hold for another department, I heard the song again. I actually had the nerve to ask the representative on the other end to place me back on hold to hear the entire song! Today, the song popped in my head out if nowhere, and I finally decided to google it. Your site was #1. I read every word, and was utterley disheartened to find that he died shortly after the song was released. Thank you for opening my eyes to such a talent, and making me aware of the illustrious voice behind the music. Only the good (voices) die young.

Above are five RARE candid photos of Ephraim Lewis, taken around 1987. Special thanks to Paulo Roberto Back <paulback@matrix.com.br> for sharing these great photos with us. Paulo met him in 1987, when his band called "Expresso" went to England to record an album called "Expresso" (see below). Ephraim did some backing vocals, played some percussion and sang lead in one song (an English version, see below). He used to live in a city called Stoke-on-Trent. We sang in portuguese, and it was strange, because Ephraim did all the chorus perfecly. This song remains unreleased. He was a great talent. I was shocked when I knew he was dead. A great voice, a great person. Click on any of the five small photos above to enlarge.

Tassos Patokos has mentioned that the artwork of all Ephraim's releases was done by Vaughan Oliver, the famous British designer. He is most known for making the sleeves for the influential label 4ad (Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins, Pixies and many many more).

Here is the rare CD called "Impar" that Ephraim Lewis recorded with the band EXPRESSO in 1987. Track 10 is an English version of the first song on the CD, and it's sung by Ephraim Lewis. It's called "Love Spirits Haunts Our Hearts (Deixe Como Está)." A very special thanks to Paulo Roberto Back <paulback@matrix.com.br> for giving me this CD, I really appreciate it! A PRESS SHEET that was included with promo copies of this CD single contained some text in German. I have tried to translate it as closely as possible into English. The German text is as follows:

The English translation (as best as I could figure) is: Summer in the big city. From the clubs penetrate pulsating basses, whose rhythms let sultry air vibrate: melodies with Mid-tempo Beats and relaxed Soul Grooves transform the night to the day. "World Between Us" is the soundtrack for such summer nights. The second single of Ephraim Lewis' Debut album SKIN establishes the singer at the point of the first British club Soul division, originating from Birmingham. That is the music of the Night, describes LEWIS its from spectacular effects released and from Marvin Gaye and Nat King Cole influenced Gospel Soul: "I try to create tendencies - a positive music pointing into the future."

This amazing album contains the following songs: SKIN - IT CAN'T BE FOREVER - DROWNING IN YOUR EYES - MORTAL SEED - WORLD BETWEEN US - CAPTURED - SUMMER LIGHTNING - RULE FOR LIFE - SAD SONG - HOLD ON
  • Here is a Japanese CD album for "Skin" (catalog number WMC5-511). I apologize for the low quality of the image, I found it in an eBay auction.

  • CAN'T FIND THE ALBUM???
The "Skin" album is unfortunately long out-of-print, and chances are you won't find it at your local record shop (although I do occasionally see a few used copies turn up at used record shops). But all hope is not lost - you can download the entire album at PERFECT quality - legally and legitimately - from Apple's iTunes Music Store. Apple's iTunes software is available for free download for both PC (Windows 2000 or XP) and Macintosh users. To go to the download page, CLICK HERE

Once you have the iTunes software, it's quick and easy to download the entire album for just $9.90 (or individual songs for only 99¢ each). Just type "Ephraim Lewis" in the search box at the top of the Music Store window, and the entire album will come up. All songs can be "previewed" for 30 seconds before you buy them, but I assure you that the entire album is FANTASTIC, and well worth the price.

Can't download or use iTunes? There's always eBay, which usually has used copies of the "Skin" album available for very low prices (I've seen it sell for as little as one dollar). To search for the "Skin" album on eBay, click here. If you can't find a copy on eBay, check any good used record shop; I've found the CD at used stores for as little as $2.00. One fan mentions that you can usually find new and used copies at Amazon.com - click this link to search for the album.

    CASSETTES:
  • Thanks SO MUCH to Denise Eaker for giving me this rare Cassette Single. It contains the edit version of "Drowning In Your Eyes" as well as the great Non-Album track "Dreams From The Trees."

  • CHART INFO:
Eric Colley <bla00073@mail.wvnet.edu> shares with us this chart info for Ephraim Lewis:
"Drowning In Your Eyes" entered the Billobard Hot 100 chart on September 12, 1992. It peaked at no.72 and spent 9 weeks on the chart. It never made the singles sales chart, but reached no.66 on the airplay chart. 'Skin' never made the Billboard 200, but "It Can't Be Forever" debuted on Billboard's R&B chart on June 6, 1992, stayed on the chart for 6 weeks, peaking at #66. The videos for "It Can't Be Forever" and "Drowning In Your Eyes" went into rotation on both MTV and VH-1, but for a short time only.

However, another source (http://www.duke.edu/~ggh1/elewis.html) claims that "Drowning In Your Eyes" entered the charts on September 4, 1992, and peaked at #29 (for one week) on October 9, 1992. It spent 7 weeks on the chart.

Tyler shares this chart info with us:
"It Can't Be Forever" debuted in the "New And Active" section on 5/29/92, and spent 5 weeks there. Drowning In Your Eyes debuted there on 8/7/92, and spent 11 weeks--it also even made the Top 40, peaking at #29. Their charts measure only radio play and playlists, thus explaining why Drowning did so much better on their charts.

According to Lloyd Hardy, the following information is from www.recordresearch.com:

IT CAN'T BE FOREVER - Elektra #64748 debuted on R&B chart on 6-6-92, stayed on chart for 6 weeks and peaked at #66
DROWNING IN YOUR EYES - Elektra #64710 debuted on R&B chart on 10-3-92, stayed on chart for 4 weeks and peaked at #80

VIDEOS (all are promo-only; there are no commercially-available videos for him):

  • "It Can't Be Forever" - "Summer Lightning" 2-track promo-only video, taped live for the Late Show. This video is rather eerie, because there is absolutely NO audience applause on this tape. It's most likely that he taped these songs "live," but there was no audience present. When he takes his jacket off to perform the second song, you can see how incredibly muscular he was.
  • "It Can't Be Forever" (Version With Gun, 4:27) Elektra Records official 1-track promo video. Directed by BIG TV! and produced by Jeremy Barrett.
  • There also exists a video for "Drowning In Your Eyes." The theme of this video was mainly shot in a beautiful surreal forest. It was shown on MTV and/or VH-1 in either late June or early July 1992. It was about the same time that the same tune recieved limited airplay on Power 92 (KKFR Phoenix). As of now, this song gets some airplay on KYOT 95.5 which is a jazz station. This clip is available on the promo-only compilation by TELEGENICS (volume 115C, Top-40 Pop). The clip is for the Edit (4:13) version of the song.

  • DVD of rare videos:

Shown here is a spectacular DVD with all four clips mentioned above (plus a beautiful photo gallery). The DVD features instant scene access, full-motion previews, a photo gallery (with 40 photos), and digital sound (the soundtrack on the "Drowning In Your Eyes" video has been digitally re-mastered).
This is a DVD-R disc, which might not play very well (or maybe not at all) in some models of DVD players. This is a DVD, and not a VCD (DVDs have much better quality than VCDs).

Shown here is a special deluxe 2-DISC SET that contains the above-mentioned DVD, PLUS the 17-track CD-R of rare audio mentioned above.

    12" VINYL SINGLES:

"It Can't Be Forever" USA promo-only 12" single, with otherwise unreleased 12" Remix (6:01). Note that the "Medici Mix" found on some imports of this single is the exact same mix as the "12" Remix" shown here.
After many years of searching (and spending $150.00), I finally found the German 12" single for "World Between Us" - shown here are the front and back of the picture sleeve, and the record label (which, coincidentally, has a mis-printing on it - notice that the "De Isaac Mix" of "World Between Us" is listed as "De Isaac TREES"). This remix is really great, and can be found ONLY on this single and the rare German CD single shown above.

Five Obscure and RARE Non-Album Cuts:
    "I Know I Don't Walk On Water"
A scarce Non-LP song, recorded with Laura Satterfield, called "I Know I Don't Walk On Water" also exists. As far as I know, it can be found ONLY on the soundtrack to "Made In America" (which is sometimes available on the eBay auction web site). The song was written by Laura Satterfield and Ira Walker, for New Regency Music/WB Music Corp./Third Stone From the Middle/Princess Soul bottom/Raski Music ASCAP. It's from 1993. It was produced by Peter Asher, Arranged by Monty Byrom, David Campbell.

    "Best Of Every Year"
A second scarce Non-LP song called "Best Of Every Year" appears on the B-side of the import single for "It Can't Be Forever" (both the 12" single and CD contain this track). Produced by Kevin Bacon and Jonathan Quarmby for Manna Productions. Executive Producer - Mick Cater.

    "Dreams From The Trees"
This song appears as a "B-side" to some singles for "Drowning In Your Eyes." It also appears on the German 12" single and CD single for "World Between Us." It's a really great mid-tempo song, featuring great instrumentation.

"Love Spirits Haunts Our Hearts" (English version of "Deixe Como Está"):
This rare song was recorded by the group EXPRESSO (see above) around 1987. Ephraim Lewis sings on lead vocals. Very special thanks to Paulo Roberto Back <paulback@matrix.com.br> for providing this song.

    "Eldon Street"
Ephraim Lewis sings on background vocals (along with John Reilly) on this rare track by a group called BOY ON A DOLPHIN. The song is called "Eldon Street." There are a couple of parts where you can clearly hear Ephraim's beautiful vocals.
